She was born and raised in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. When she migrated to the United States, she followed her dreams and became a published author of several cookbooks.
Her first cookbook. Tropical Palate Taste of Jamaica, in 2009 was mentioned in the Miami Herald. Then followed by Tropical Palate Taste of the Islands.
Book #3 My Own Food she co-authored with her then 7 yrs old son, resulted in an appearance on the local Miami NBC-6 Nightly News in 2012, and a recipient of
The GRIO top 100 influential people award along with then-first lady Michele Obama.
Dorette Darby has championed many causes such as Cook for a Cause, a 2011 event that she spearheads and donated $3,000 to five young men who had aged out of the foster care system.
Dorette and the Miami-Dade FAWL have prepared meals for Foster Youth Fun Day in the Park for four years before the Covid-19 pandemic, where she served over 300 foster families.
Dorette considers herself a modern-day farmer and is actively a part of "WOM" Women on the move farmers in her community in Jamaica.
She and her siblings are always giving back to the local community.
